Chateau Montrose, Saint-Estephe

[2eme Cru Classé 1855] Rated one of the Top 10 chateaux of Bordeaux, the "big", fruity and well structured wines of Chateau Montrose are still very reasonably priced. The 2003 vintage was one of the best in Bordeaux and Robert Parker gave it a fabulous 97 to 100 points!

One of the Médoc's best-situated vineyards and one of the commune's most impeccably clean and well-kept cellars, Montrose was for years associated with huge, dense, powerful wines that needed several decades of cellaring to be soothing enough to drink. Chateau Montrose is found in the heart of Saint Estèphe, sloping down from the primary ridge to the majestic Gironde. Considered one of the top Saint Estèphe, Montrose is prized for its classic Claret style, big fruit and full well structured taste.

David Peppercorn MW, says: the name Montrose, originates from the translation of "rose-coloured hill", from the dumose expanse of heather and briary. The vineyard and wine was first known as "Montrose-Ségur", but the tiny 5 to 6 hectares was a minor appurtenance to the Calon estate. When Dumoulin sold the Calon estate in 1824, he kept Montrose and then expanded it in incremental stages over the next few years, clearing scrubland, planting more vines and building a small chateau. By the 1855 Classification both Montrose and Chateau Cos d`Estournel had usurped Chateau Calon-Ségur within the Saint Estephe heirachy. Dumoulin died in 1861 and the estate passed through several owners, eventually ending up in the hands of Louis Victor Charmolüe whose family have been proprietors ever since.

Chateau Montrose 2003, EUR 198.00*
Score: 97 points.  Anticipated maturity: 2010-2035.

Robert Parker: 97 points
The enormous 2003 Montrose is built along the lines of the 1989 rather than the 1990. It boasts a dense black/purple color in addition to an extraordinary bouquet of scorched earth, blackberries, and cassis, fabulous purity, a skyscraper-like texture, and substantial tannin in the finish. This superb, huge, ripe wine is one of the vintage’s most prodigious offerings. However, patience will be essential for anyone purchasing this 2003.

Jancis Robinson: 19/20 points
Fabulous stuff. Extremely deep purple. Very deep and dense in every way yet with wonderful freshness and vivacity. Rich, animal and meaty at first on the nose but then on the palate it's miraculously well defined and delineated. Great opulence but without a hint of overripeness (the Charmolues distinguish it from their popular 1990 in this respect). Great clarity. The tannins are beautifully ripe and carry through the tasting experience as opposed to sneaking in nastily at the end. There is a beginning, middle and end to this wine that is so refreshing it's like an energiser. Young Charmolue seemed to view his 2003 with the same sort of stunned amazement as one might finding one has given birth to a prodigy.

Chateau Montrose 2000, EUR 169.00*
Score: 96 points.  Anticipated maturity: 2010-2040.

Robert Parker: 96 points
This estate has frequently hit the bull's eye over recent vintages, and the 2000 Montrose is the finest effort produced since the compelling 1990 and 1989. This gigantically sized, tannic, backward effort boasts a saturated inky purple color followed by a huge nose of acacia flavors, crushed blackberries, creme de cassis, vanilla, hickory smoke, and minerals. Extremely full-bodied, powerful, dense, and multi-layered, this unreal Montrose should last for 30+ years. A blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, this is a special wine that has exceptional purity and length.

Jancis Robinson: 17.5/20 points
Deep crimson. Quite inky. It doesn’t give much on the nose. Completely hidden and introvert. Less obviously playing to the gallery than Cos d’Estournel. Solid. Coping with the ripeness. Will it ever sing? A bit of a puzzle at present.
